FEUGA and IMPWORKS will attend Demoviña 2024: Advances in Sustainable Viticulture

10/07/2024

The Galician Enterprise-University Foundation (FEUGA) will sponsor the agricultural machinery demonstration event Demoviña 2024, in collaboration with the IPMWORKS project. The event will take place on July 24 at the Terras do Cigarrón winery, part of the Monterrei DO, and has become a key national showcase for the demonstration of agricultural machinery in the field. FEUGA will have a stand at the event, where attendees can learn about the various projects in which FEUGA participates, both at the European and national levels.

The Foundation will be present at the event alongside IPMWORKS, a project funded by the Horizon 2020 program that promotes the use of alternatives to chemical pesticides in agriculture through practical demonstrations and dissemination of results. The event will provide viticulturists from the HUB and across Galicia with a new opportunity to discover innovative technologies to optimize their tasks and applications, as well as share knowledge with other professionals in the sector who share the goal of advancing towards more economically and environmentally sustainable viticulture.

Other viticulture projects that will be present include PLASMOWINE and REGAVID, both funded by grants for the execution of projects by the operational groups of the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) within the framework of the Rural Development Program (RDP) of Galicia 2014-2020. PLASMOWINE, led by Monet Tecnología e Innovación and with the participation of the Areeiro Phytopathological Station (Pontevedra County Council), Viña Costeira, FEUGA, and the University of Vigo, aims to develop a decision support system to determine the optimal timing for treatments against vine downy mildew based on spore counts and the analysis of meteorological, agronomic (management), and crop condition parameters. On the other hand, REGAVID, also led by the company Monet Viticulture and with the participation of Bodegas Martín Códax, the Proyectos y Planificación (PROEPLA) research group from the University of Santiago de Compostela, and FEUGA, is developing a model designed to help Galician winemakers make informed decisions about when and how much to irrigate, considering various variables such as soil properties, grape variety, and expected weather conditions.

An Essential Event for Viticulture

Demoviña 2024, organized by Revista Campo along with Agromillora-VCR and the Martín Códax group, is an opportunity for viticulture professionals to share experiences and knowledge about the sector’s major challenges, from plant health to climate change challenges. Topics such as cover crops, nitrogen and carbon fixation, and spraying adapted to the characteristics of Galician vineyards will be widely discussed.

The wine sector, present in 150 Galician municipalities, contributes more than 1.4% of Galicia’s GDP and helps maintain 1.5% of employment in the community. Galicia, with 219,356 winemakers representing 39.9% of the national total, is the autonomous community with the highest number of winemakers according to data from the study on ‘The Economic and Social Importance of the Wine Sector in Galicia’ prepared by the Spanish Wine Interprofessional Organization (OIVE).

FEUGA invites all interested parties to visit its stand at Demoviña 2024 to learn more about European projects that promote sustainable and efficient viticulture.
