Cogomelos+: Innovation and hiking for the improvement of timber and mycological production in Galicia

24/10/2023

The Operational Group Cogomelos+ celebrates the second demonstration day in the neighboring forest of Serragorda, in Begonte, Lugo, next Saturday, November 11 at 10:00 am. The day will focus on diversity and identification of wild mushrooms while explaining the latest results obtained in the innovation project.

To attend the event there will be two possible bus departures to Serragorda mountain. The first stop will be at the Escuela Politécnica Superior de Lugo at 9:00h. Then, the bus will leave for Begonte, where those who decide to go by car will be picked up at the town square. Finally, it is estimated to arrive at the forestry area around 10:00h to start the demonstration day.

The Cogomelos+ Operational Group was created in 2022 with the aim of increasing the mycological productivity of Galician forests since, unlike other autonomous communities, there is a large percentage that is wasted, among other reasons, due to the lack of silvicultural care to make timber and mycological production compatible. To this end, the Cogomelos+ project aims to introduce innovative management technologies with the objective of achieving maximum economic yields from the Galician pine forests, both for timber and mycological purposes, while prioritizing the sustainability of the resource and the maintenance of mycological biodiversity.

The session will consist of a route through the forest environment of Baamonde where attendees will be taught basic notions for the identification of mushrooms and the description of the species found. In addition, the general lines of pine forest management by forestry service companies will be detailed and the most significant aspects of the autonomous legislation on mycological exploitation will be commented. We will count with the presence and intervention of representatives of the three entities that integrate the project, in which we participate together with Servitec Medioambiente and the University of Santiago de Compostela.

Cogomelos+ is funded by grants for the implementation of operational groups of the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) co-financed 75% by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) under the Rural Development Program (RDP) of Galicia 2014-2020. The Consellería del Medio Rural is the body of the Galician Administration responsible for proposing and executing the general guidelines in the rural area, and is responsible for agriculture, livestock, rural development and regional planning, rural, industrial, agri-food and forestry structures, forestry, forest fires prevention and defense.
