In collaboration with the Horizon 2020-funded IPMWORKS project, FEUGA is organizing the final demonstration event within the framework of this project, which has been ongoing since October 2020. The event will take place on July 30 from 12:00 to 14:00 in the auditorium of Bodegas Martín Códax. During this meeting, techniques and benefits of composting and vermicomposting will be explored, with a special focus on grape pomace as a raw material.
The event will feature key experts in the field. Hugo Martínez Cordeiro, Alberto da Silva Sierio, and Alejandro Figueroa Rodríguez from the Department of Ecology and Animal Biology and the Marine Research Center of the University of Vigo (CIM-UVigo) will guide attendees through different aspects of the process. Martínez Cordeiro will explain the phases and conditions of composting and vermicomposting, while da Silva Sierio will detail the production and applications of vermicompost, with practical examples in viticulture. Figueroa Rodríguez will present real samples and visual results, highlighting the environmental and agronomic benefits of these sustainable practices.
Integrated Pest Management
Composting and vermicomposting are fundamental practices within Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in viticulture due to their numerous benefits. These methods not only allow the transformation of organic waste such as grape pomace into useful resources but also improve soil structure and fertility. Compost and vermicompost increase organic matter, promote beneficial microbiological activity, and help maintain a natural balance in the vineyard, thus reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers and enhancing plant resistance to diseases and pests. Additionally, by utilizing these resources, agricultural waste generation is minimized, and a positive contribution is made to the environmental and economic sustainability of the wine sector.
This event is linked to the celebration of Albariño Week in Cambados, providing an opportunity to combine learning about sustainable viticulture practices with the celebration of one of the region’s most important festivals.
