FEUGA took part in Galicia Biodays 2026, one of the leading events in the biotechnology sector, where it was able to learn first-hand about the latest trends, challenges and opportunities shaping the future of biotechnology in Galicia and Europe. After attending this event, FEUGA strengthened its collaboration network within the Galician biotechnology ecosystem by consolidating relationships with companies, research centres, startups and key institutions in the regional biotech field. The event served as a meeting point to identify new cooperation opportunities, promote joint projects and share knowledge among the different stakeholders in the sector. In addition, it helped reinforce FEUGA’s role as a connecting entity between universities, research and industry, fostering innovation transfer and the development of initiatives with a real impact on Galicia’s economic and scientific fabric.
These are some of the main conclusions and takeaways from the event
Galicia consolidates its position as a benchmark “bio-region” in Europe
The Galician biotechnology ecosystem continues to grow and now brings together 162 active entities, more than 2.037 billion euros in turnover and nearly 5,700 specialised jobs. In addition, the sector accounts for 17% of Galicia’s total R&D investment, a figure that reflects the region’s strategic commitment to establishing itself as one of the most relevant biotechnology hubs in Europe.
Europe aims to boost biotechnology competitiveness
One of the central topics of the meeting was the future development of the European “Biotech Act” and the measures needed to strengthen the sector. The main conclusions highlighted the need to reduce regulatory barriers, facilitate access to funding and foster closer collaboration between public institutions and private companies, with the goal of speeding up the market uptake of innovation.
Artificial intelligence will be a key driver for biotechnology
AI was presented as a strategic tool with a cross-cutting impact in areas such as health, food and sustainability. Applications related to personalised medicine, new drug discovery and biosecurity demonstrate this technology’s potential to transform the sector. Initiatives such as HealthAI Factory and OneHealth DataSpace also show Galicia’s ambition to position itself prominently in this technological transition.
Biotechnology is evolving towards more personalised solutions
Sessions focused on advanced therapies, personalised medicine and the One Health approach revealed that the future of the sector lies in developing solutions increasingly tailored to each patient’s characteristics and needs. The integration of tools such as genomics, artificial intelligence and big data analysis will make it possible to improve prevention, optimise diagnosis and design more precise treatments, paving the way for predictive medicine aimed at improving quality of life.
European projects are creating new opportunities for Galicia
The Galician region is increasing its presence in European initiatives and programmes linked to innovation and biotechnology. This participation opens up new channels for international collaboration, facilitates access to funding and helps to strengthen the research and technology transfer capacity of the Galician ecosystem.
